Leaving Your Cat Home Alone

Real Tips from Minka the Cat on Keeping Us Happy While You’re Gone All Day 🐾

You’re off to work, errands, or whatever mysterious things humans do outside. But what about me? Don’t worry — I’ve mastered the solo routine. I’ll share what works (and what doesn’t) to keep us cats calm, comfy, and enriched while you’re gone.

Quick Checklist: Cat Comfort While You’re Out

  • Fresh water (💧 even better: a fountain)
  • Puzzle feeder
  • Clean litter box
  • Cozy nap spots (bonus: sunlight)
  • Window view
  • Scratching post or board
  • Interactive toys
  • Puzzle toy with hidden treats
  • Cat-safe music playlist (LIVE)
  • Optional: Pet cam with treat-tossing

🐾 1. Food & Water: The Basics Matter

I need clean, fresh water. We’re picky. A water fountain makes it more fun (and keeps us hydrated). As for meals? Please don’t just leave a full bowl of food and expect me not to go full gremlin mode.
Instead, try a puzzle feederlike this one — which keeps me mentally engaged and helps prevent scarf-and-barf episodes.
It has adjustable difficulty levels to keep things interesting. (Some cats — like me, Minka — don’t care for the globe pieces, but I love the rest of it.)

🧠 2. Keep Me Mentally Stimulated

When we’re bored, we chew plants, knock stuff off your shelves, or climb where we “shouldn’t.” Prevent chaos by:

  • Rotating toys
  • Hiding treats in puzzle toys — like this one I approve of
  • Setting up a window perch so we can spy on birds, squirrels, and neighbor drama (it’s basically Cat Netflix)

🛋️ 3. Give Me Cozy, Safe Spaces

I’ll nap. A lot. Give me options: a box, a blanket, the top of the fridge. We like to feel safe and high up — it’s a vibe. Bonus points if my nap spot gets some sun. Here’s Gigi, our late sister, enjoying a sunny spot.

🎵 4. Cats Like Music (Really!)

Fun fact: We actually respond to certain types of music — especially calming, low-frequency sounds or cat-specific playlists.
Try searching “music for cats” or “relaxing cat music” on YouTube. Even better, pick a LIVE playlist so the sound doesn’t stop after a few hours — it’ll keep playing all day while you’re gone. Here’s one I like (that isn’t live) so you can watch it anytime!

🎥 5. Optional: Pet Cam With Treat Tossing

Want to check in on me during the day and toss me a snack? Now we’re talking.
Try the Furbo 360° Camera — it lets you see what I’m up to, talk to me (I’ll probably ignore you), and toss treats, which makes a fun midday surprise.

🐾 Minka’s Final Words:

We don’t mind being alone for a little bit — as long as we feel safe, entertained, and loved. Set me up right, and I’ll nap like royalty, play like a kitten, and greet you at the door when you come home. Probably.
